In a proud moment for India’s medical fraternity, renowned neurosurgeon Dr. Raj Kumar has been formally recognized by the House of Commons, United Kingdom, for his exceptional contributions to modern neurosurgery and pediatric neuro care.
The honour was conferred by Mrs. Seema Malhotra, Member of Parliament from Feltham and Heston since 2011, who now serves as the UK’s State Minister of Migration & Citizenship and Minister for Equalities. She presented the award to Dr. Raj Kumar through the President of the Commonwealth during a special event attended by dignitaries from several countries at the Commonwealth Secretariat, Pall Mall, St James.
The recognition celebrates Dr. Raj Kumar’s lifelong dedication to neurosurgery, including his pivotal role in founding the Neurological Surgeon Society of India and pioneering research in pediatric neurosurgery. His contributions to modern medicine have earned him the honorary title of the “Jeevak of Modern India,” a reference to Jeevak Komar Bhakk, the legendary physician of Lord Buddha and royal doctor to King Bimbisara, who is credited with performing the world’s first brain surgery over 2,500 years ago.
Dr. Raj Kumar has extensively researched and published on Jeevak’s legacy, asserting its foundational influence on global medical practice. This recognition by the UK Parliament is among the rarest accolades for an Indian doctor on an international stage and symbolizes the growing global respect for India’s medical expertise.
The event was hosted under the banner of the Commonwealth Association — a body representing 56 independent nations of the former British Empire, dedicated to the promotion of global health, sustainable development, and democracy.
This honour stands as a testament to India’s ever-growing influence in the field of medical science and highlights Dr. Raj Kumar’s legacy as a torchbearer of ancient wisdom blended with modern innovation.
